Yooper Comic Books About Yooperland – Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Yooper Comic Books

I’ve located a horde of Yooper comic books. These are in mint condition and like they are directly from the printer.yooper comic books This particular comic book is actually the very first Yooper Land collection of cartoons I created, starting back in the late 1980’s. The feature appeared in almost all of the newspapers throughout the upper peninsula.

Yooper Bloopers was the name of the single panel cartoon which had no central characters but was basically a reflection on all that encompasses life and living in Michigan’s U.P. Everything from fishing and camping to taking saunas and hunting deer. You name it, and I was creating cartoons around the subject matter with a humorous twist for good measure.

Inside front cover has short bio and mug shot of yours truly . . .

This comic book is a standard 32 pages with two separate panels per page for a total of 64 cartoons throughout the collection, including a color cover that shows a Yooper chef pulling a pizza out of a slot on the door of a Sauna. In combination with it actually being the ‘first edition’ and considering these books are now almost 30 years old – these two factors alone, make it  a “classic”, it’s a very collectible comic.

The publication date on inside cover is 1990 by The Landmark Corporation. It was the brainchild of Tom Lee, the Ontonagon Area High School’s first librarian who was one of the first innovative thinkers I got to know back then. Tom launched the first high school radio station – WOAS FM – and was the first business person I knew of who used computers. Tom published a popular business and phone directory for northern Michigan called U.P. West that had a very big circulation and was well known and well received each year it was annually distributed.

When Tom approached me with the concept of a comic book featuring my work, I was  interested because I knew it would enhance the cartoons I was already doing for all of the newspapers and generate additional buzz. Tom also set up a meeting with WLUC TV6 who interviewed me at the cartoon studio.  Frank Kulbertis with his crew and myself talked about cartoons and cartooning and the news business for a whole afternoon. By the time the segment appeared on the early and late news, it was probably 3 or 4 minutes. The same story was re-broadcast the following day on the station’s morning and noon news broadcasts. That newscast provided the cartoons a lot of notoriety and it also resulted in another profile of my cartooning business that appeared on Upper Michigan Today at a later date.

Some of the newspapers publishing Yooper Bloopers on a weekly basis included: The L’anse Sentinel, The Newberry News, The Ironwood Daily Globe, Crystal Falls Diamond Drill, The Menominee County Journal, The Escanaba Delta Reporter, The Norway Current – Norway, Michigan, Sunday edition of Marquette Mining Journal and The Grand Marais Pilot and Pictured Rocks Review. All of these newspapers including The Thunder Bay Chronicle in Thunderbay, Ontario published the cartoon on their Saturday ‘Outdoors Page‘. Yooper Bloopers and the comic book also received additional national attention through a press release appearing in Editor & Publisher magazine that was read by U.S. and Canadian newspaper publishers each week. A copy of that release appears in my recent article about self syndication. Yooper comic books also included another follow up title I will blog about at a later date.
